Generally Bakery is associated with baking bread, buns, cakes, biscuits and pastries. But the moment I enrolled in the Bakery and Confectionary course offered by our Sri Vishnu Educational Society, I realized that there is lot more to baking. Bakery and confectionery as a career is both an art and science. A baker needs to add her or his own innovation to her or his knowledge of baking. We learnt the intricacies of baking like weighing out the ingredients, mixing, dividing, moulding and setting the dough, baking, decorating, wrapping and so on.
But we went way beyond that. We are also taught to have proper knowledge of ingredients, costing, proper methods of preparing products and the most essential thing, its pricing. We were able to know that it is mozzarella and not Amul Cheese that should be used to make a pizza. We also realized that baking a product well is only half the process. Presentation is important as well. These are in fact the qualities of a baker.
